Matt Gardner is a senior software engineer on BlackRock’s software engineering group. His team is responsible for developing and managing the core engineering team for BlackRock’s Aladdin platform. He has been an enthusiastic Cassandra user since 2011. Previously, he spent time leading the team responsible for core systems used for investment trade processing.
Johnny Miller is an experienced developer, architect and team lead with a history of working at Sky, AOL Broadband and Alcatel-Lucent. Johnny has architected and delivered a number of enterprise platforms using Cassandra as a key component for achieving high availability and efficient scaling. Johnny’s belief in the performance and scalability of Cassandra lead him to join DataStax and drive solutions using Cassandra.
Matthew Gardner, a senior software engineering team member from BlackRock and Johnny Miller from DataStax discussed their thoughts on various aspects of using Cassandra in investment management and in the DataStax enterprise.
Matthew discussed the variety of ways in which Cassandra is utilized at BlackRock to help power our Aladdin investment management platform. He gave an overview of the use of Cassandra at BlackRock, with an emphasis on how we manage multi-tenancy in our Cassandra infrastructure. Multi-tenancy can mean different things to different people, but it often comes with added requirements related to security, isolation, and administration. He highlighted in the talk how we operate (and make changes to) Cassandra to accommodate these needs in our platform.
Johnny Miller also presented his views on and approaches to security with Cassandra in the DataStax Enterprise. The various features and options available were explored and some best practices were discussed.
